With filmmaker, playwright, klezmer musician, cultural entrepreneur Ruti Lachs

Ruti Lachs will share stories, original music, and clips from her award-winning
video on the history and present of the Cork Jewish Community. As the Irish
people throughout their diaspora celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, we will reflect on
the small but vital Jewish presence in Ireland’s second city, Cork and environs.

Ruti Lachs
Ruti Lachs is a musician, writer, and music teacher living in
Crosshaven in County Cork. She has been researching the Cork
Jewish community over the last 3 years, and has written a musical
play set in Cork city in the early 1900s, Green Feather Boa.
In normal times, Ruti performs klezmer music with her band, and
one-woman comedy musical theatre shows, Sideways on Planet
Piano and A Different Kettle.

Ruti’s Cork Jewish Culture Virtual Walk video won a National
Heritage Week Award in Ireland last year. It has been viewed
around the world, and as a result she has been contacted by
many Jewish Corkonians, or people with Cork ancestry, now living
in the USA, UK and Israel.

Ruti is planning to lead tours of Jewish Cork when the pandemic
is over, and to travel the world meeting her new-found and
far-flung Cork Jewish community. She also hopes to get her
musical onto the stage in Cork, Dublin, London, and – who knows?
Maybe Broadway?

She is an active member of the small yet active Munster Jewish
Community, which has members from all over the southern
counties of Ireland. At the moment MJC has regular services
and events on Zoom, to which all are invited.
