SUMMARY:Temple Reads: The Cloister by James Carroll
DESCRIPTION:The Cloister\n by James Carroll\nSunday\, September 8 at 7:00 PM via Zoom\nFrom National Book Award-winning writer James Carroll comes a novel of the timeless love story of Peter Abelard and Héloïse\, and its impact on a modern priest and a Holocaust survivor seeking sanctuary in Manhattan.\nFather Michael Kavanagh is shocked when he sees a friend from his seminary days at the altar of his humble parish in upper Manhattan—a friend who was forced to leave under scandalous circumstances. Compelled to reconsider the past\, Father Kavanagh wanders into the medieval haven of the Cloisters and stumbles into a conversation with a lovely and intriguing docent\, Rachel Vedette.\nHaving survived the Holocaust and escaped to America\, Rachel remains obsessed with her late father’s greatest scholarly achievement: a study demonstrating the relationship between the famously discredited monk Peter Abelard and Jewish scholars. Feeling an odd connection with Father Kavanagh\, Rachel shares with him the work that cost her father his life.\nAt the center of these interrelated stories is the classic romance between the great philosopher Abelard and his intellectual equal\, Héloïse. For Rachel\, Abelard is the key to understanding her people’s place in history. And for Father Kavanagh\, the controversial theologian may be a doorway to understanding the life he himself might have had outside the Church. SUMMARY:Porchfest at Temple Emmanuel
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday September 7th\, Temple Emmanuel will be hosting Porchfest. Bring chairs and blankets. Free concert. All around Wakefield will be folks hosting a variety of music\, a tradition many towns have adopted.\nThis is Wakefield’s first year and shows will be from 2:00-5:00 PM. A schedule will be posted\nnearer to the date. Our schedule is as follows:\n2:00 PM: INFECTIOUS\nInfectious is a newly formed party band.  We are a bunch of fun loving musicians\, who are trying to\nspread the joy of popular songs.  We are still evolving and defining our choices of music to play\, but\nall six members of the band are having a blast playing music in front of live audiences.  We made\nour debut at Reading’s Porchfest in June\, and from that\, we were invited to a venue for Wakefield’s\nPorchfest coming up in September.\nOur originator is Carol “CAZ” Gebert on lead guitar.  On rhythm guitar and flute is Jeanne “Jazz”\nSimko.  “Buzz” Billy Scarborough is our drummer and does some singing.  Eddie “EDG” Dee is on\nkeyboard and is our primary singer.  “Tomcat” Tom Reid is on bass guitar.  And Carol “Cash” Hanson\nis on vocals and acts as our Master of Ceremonies.\n3:00 PM: MARK ZELERMYER & FRIENDS\nVoted “Audience Favorite” at last year’s Linden Tree Coffeehouse Potpourri\,\nMark Zelermyer’s songs range from poignant to funny. Mark and his band\nperform around Greater Boston\, as far away as England. Side note: Mark’s\ngrandfather Israel and Sarah Blank and his mother lived 23 Chestnut St and\nmay have been founding members.\n4:00 PM: BETTY’S BOUNCE\n Betty’s Bounce plays music inspired by Django Reinhardt\, (a Parisian gypsy jazz\nguitarist of the 1930’s-40’s) and infused by American jazz\, blues and pop music. The\nmusic is lively and upbeat and covers swing\, ballads and Latin styles.\nOur Temple neighbor in the purple house is guitarist Audie Bridges\, the leader of the group\nwith his son Sam Bridges on bass. Curtis Doo is featured on guitar and vocals. Betty’s\nBounce has been together for 15 years. Venues include clubs\, outdoor festivals and\nprivate functions. They’ve released 3 recordings: Swingin’\, Blues For Django and\nLuminous.\nBetty’s Bounce recordings of Blues for Django and Luminous are now available on\nall major streaming platforms: Spotify\, Apple Music\, TikTok\, Pandora\, Amazon\,\nInstagram\, YouTube\, Tidal\, iHeartRadio\, Deezer\, and others.\nAudie Bridges\, Guitar; Curtis Doo\, Guitar and Vocals; Sam Bridges\, Bass\n

SUMMARY:Temple Reads: Waking Lions by Ayelet Gundar-Goshen
DESCRIPTION:Temple Reads: Waking Lions\nby Eyelet Gundar-Goshen\nSunday\, November 3 via Zoom\nAfter one night’s deadly mistake\, a man will go to any lengths to save his family and his reputation. \nNeurosurgeon Eitan Green has the perfect life — married to a beautiful police officer and father of two young boys. Then\, speeding along a deserted moonlit road after an exhausting hospital shift\, he hits someone. Seeing that the man\, an African migrant\, is beyond help\, he flees the scene. \nWhen the victim’s widow knocks at Eitan’s door the next day\, holding his wallet and divulging that she knows what happened\, Eitan discovers that her price for silence is not money. It is something else entirely\, something that will shatter Eitan’s safe existence and take him into a world of secrets and lies he could never have anticipated. \nWaking Lions is a gripping\, suspenseful\, and morally devastating drama of guilt and survival\, shame and desire from a remarkable young author on the rise.
