Jews around the world will soon be celebrating the holiday of Purim.  This joyous time is a golden opportunity to awaken and engage our entire community.   Like many Jewish holidays, Purim has several mitzvot associated with it.  First, of course, we are obliged to hear the Megillah of Esther read twice: on Erev Purim and on the actual day itself.  And we are meant to partake in a seudah – a Purim festive meal.  The story we celebrate is that of the victory of the Jews over the wicked Haman in Shushan, Persia.  Aided by the courageous Queen Esther and guided by her honorable cousin Mordechai, the Jews escape mass murder and turn the tables on the enemy.  And so, on Purim, We turn the tables, too, by dressing up as we are not, i.e., in costumes!!!

Another special Purim mitzvah of Mishloach Manot is the exchange of gifts and tzedakah.  For nearly 25 years, Temple Emmanuel has combined this mitzvah with a fun and successful fundraising drive for the benefit of the membership in lieu of giving traditional goodie baskets.  Over the past years, and in the true giving spirit, the received tzedakah provided by our community has been split between Temple Emmanuel and the Wakefield Food Pantry.  This would truly be a Purim mitzvah.

The Temple Emmanuel Family Megillah reading will be on Thursday, March 13, starting at 7:00 PM. We encourage all members and their families to join in on the service’s fun, laughter, and spirit. Come in costumes! Arrangements will be made to acquire Megillot books and groggers to pick up for those not attending in person.  

We will host a kid-focused Purim Party on Sunday, March 9, from 10:30 to 12:00 noon. Enjoy crafts, games, stories, and, of course, hamantaschen and a kid-friendly megillah reading.
